The foundations of the Torre dei Lamberti were laid in 1172, in an area close to the ancient Roman Forum, today Piazza delle Erbe. In 1193, it became part of the Palazzo del Consiglio, which arose following the instigation of the Libero Comune. The palace had an irregular quadrangular shape and a large inner courtyard, and had a tower on each of its corners. The Lamberti Tower is one of them. The Palazzo Comunale was built in Romanesque style, with the characteristic alternating ashlars of tufa and terracotta that can also be seen in the lower half of the tower, which in fact dates back to this period. The construction of the upper half, in bricks and with the belfry in white marble, took place in 1463.
The two bells inside, the Rengo and the Marangona, marked the public life of the city. The first, the Rengo, with its sound marked the meetings of the City Council and called the citizens to arms in case of attacks. The second, the Marangona, marked the beginning and the end of the working day for the artisans. Legend has it that a noblewoman, having killed her rival in love, was condemned by her confessor to pay for the fusion of the bell that, with its tolling, reminded her every day of her crime.
The Lamberti Tower, with its 84 meters, is today the highest building in the city of Verona. It is open to the public and it is possible to go up to the belfry, either by the stairs or, more comfortably, by the elevator. From the top of the tower you can enjoy a breathtaking 360 degree view of the city.

The Lamberti Tower is located in the very central Piazza Erbe, and is visible in almost every guided tour of Verona. It can also be visited internally and with the elevator you can access the spectacular panoramic terrace at the top of the building.
