Sanmicheli's Verona: Churches

san giorgio in braida

The profile of St George church, designed by Sanmicheli is now an important land mark on the left side of the river Adige. Inside there's the famous altar-piece by Paolo Veronese: "the martyrdom of St. George."

Some works by Sanmicheli, who was mainly a military architect, may be found in some important churches in Verona: the marble fence in the Cathedral, Santa Maria in Organo facade and Pellegrini's chapel in St. Bernardino, one of Verona more suggestive and beautiful monument, a hidden jewel, outside normal tours that, helped by the right tour guide, you will discover.

Pellegrini Chapel

cappella pellegriniFrom a lateral entrance in the church of St. Bernardino, you can access one of the most beautiful treasures of Verona: the Pellegini chapel, commissioned to Michele Sanmicheli by Margherita Pellegini for the death of her son. Sanmicheli drew inspiration from classic architecture, especially from the Pantheon in Rome, but also from Roman decorative elements which has always been abundant in Verona. The light, coming from above and spread all around uniformly and softly, reflecting on white engraved marble, creating a unique atmosphere that astonishes the visitor inspiring mystical feelings.

Duomo belltower

campanile del duomo sanmicheliSanmicheli interveened inside the Duomo of Verona where he designed the marble choir around the presbytery so that it perfectly interacts with the painted balustrade in the apse desinged by Giulio Romano. The Veronese architect is represented in the Titian painting inside the Cathedral as one of the apostoles. Sanmicheli also designs the bell tower of the Duomo, which he couldn't finish and was completed four hundreds years later by Ettore Fagiuoli.
